About

Malaysian youth do not appreciate being stereotyped as the “tidak apa” generation. They are neither ambivalent nor indifferent toward the state of the nation.

theCICAK IS WHERE WE MEET AND DISCUSS ISSUES THAT MATTER

Founded in June 2005 as an online socio-political youth magazine, theCICAK hopes to develop a generation of thinking Malaysian youth. Our team of editors and volunteers source critical articles and writers, coach them with their writing, and moderate healthy discussions on the site.

We have since built a fast growing network of more than 80 writers and editors, and have published more than 190 articles. Some articles have been republished in local newspapers and magazines.

We currently receive a loyal following of more than 2,000 unique visitors to our website every day, with each visitor reading two articles on average. We have received both local and international media coverage. We also work with major newspapers and partners to promote healthy debates.

The Bigger Picture

Malaysians under 35 will soon constitute 65 percent of the country by year 2010. Will we have a generation of intelligent voters and capable leaders?

theCICAK will make sure that this is so.

How is theCICAK different from other blogs and forums?

1. theCICAK editors guide writers and make sure that they have valid examples to support their arguments. We also look out for proper punctuation and style.

2. Comments are moderated to promote responsible, intelligent discussion.

3. We don’t take sides, and publish articles from all political spectrums. Because we have more liberal contributors, theCICAK’s editors actively seek conservative writers.

WHY theCICAK?

Pronounced as “CHEE-CHAK.” In Bahasa Melayu, the word “cicak” means lizard. But a more domestic one. It is commonly found in Malaysian homes, and is regarded as a nuisance.

“Whimsical, but think about it - they’re ever present, hear everything you say, and hold a counsel among each other,” said Nurjehan, a former editor of theCICAK.
