There are many things about my religion that I have yet to understand. These days, religion is very much the reason for violence and hatred. However, I strongly believe that we shouldn’t fault religion so quickly.
Every religion preaches that life is beautiful and that we should practice forgiveness.
Islam has the same stance towards adultery. If the wrongdoer repents, then he or she is forgiven.
In the video above, we can see how a group of men are battering a couple for allegedly committing adultery. (I’m not sure whether the video is authentic. But it looks pretty real.)
Perhaps they knew the husband, or perhaps the husband is part of the group. I don’t know. I can’t fully understand the heavy Kedahan dialect.
Let’s talk. How far would you go if your lover cheated on you? Be honest.
Historically, the very first allegation of adultery in Islam came from Prophet Muhammad’s time, when Aisha was left behind and had to ride alone on a camel with a man. In this case, divine intervention came in the form of a sentence in the Quran.
In Islam the punishment for adultery, if proven beyond doubt by four witnesses or more, is written in the Quran.
Surah An-Nur, Verse 2:
“The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication, - flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.”
The punishment above is not for married individuals.
According to Kuwaiti law, both the married adulterer and adulteress would be stoned to death. Iran was cast in the spotlight a year ago for wanting to stone several women to death for allegedly committing adultery.
In Malaysian history, local folk lore tells of how adultery was punishable by death in the olden days, as we may recall in the tale of Mahsuri. The syariah law in the state of Terengganu states that those found guilty of committing adultery are to be stoned to death.
Let’s look at this from a lawful point of view.
Even if the couple in the video were about to commit or have committed adultery, punishing them by way of assault and battery is a crime.
