If you like teaching, you should consider quitting your day job right now and become a private tutor. Recent newspaper reports (here, here and here) estimate that private tuition centers and tutors rake in RM20,000 to RM50,000 a month. In most cases, this income is not declared and is not taxed.
Parents are reported to fork out as much as RM1,000 a month to pay for their children’s tuition classes. Because of this, private tuition centers are blossoming like mushrooms after a thunderstorm.
Tuition classes have become a pop-culture phenomenon. In Malaysia, everybody who can afford it, goes for tuition. Even the smartest kids enroll in classes. I guess you can attribute that to the “kiasu” mentality Malaysians have.
On a serious note, this is a worrying trend. The number of students going for tuition classes have increased significantly over the past 15 years. This means students are less reliant on school teachers. Students no longer turn their school teachers as the primary source of information.
Please don’t get me wrong, there are still some extremely dedicated teachers. Unfortunately, they are a dying breed.
Public education has to change.
School teachers who teach tuition on the side should be punished. This may sound a bit harsh, but it could improve the education standard in Malaysia.
A teacher I spoke to said that most teachers who give tuition classes neglect their school duties. However, many continue to teach in public schools because they enjoy the incentives provided by the government.
Greedy teachers should be blamed for the state of our public education system.
Something is very wrong, if students continue to rely more on tuition classes to pass their exams. Schools might even cease to exist if this trend continues.
