Dare to document: Calling for submissions

By MARC VAGHT

The Freedom Film Fest was inspired by a Malaysian named Justin Louis. He was the first co-ordinator of Pusat Komunikasi Malaysia (KOMAS), an organisation that promotes human rights issues through creative and interactive storytelling.

In December 1994, a group of young activists went to Ulu Baram, Sarawak, to investigate possible rape incidents of Penan women by forest rangers and other human rights violations. Armed with a video camera, Louis worked tirelessly documenting the struggles of grassroots communities in Malaysia.

As the long-boat carrying Louis’s team went up the Rajang river, it encountered complications and capsized. Louis lost his life in the strong rapids. He was only 32.

He believed in the power of moving images in bringing about social awareness and change. His zest and passion for life was matched by his commitment to transform the lives of the marginalised and the oppressed. In memory of his work and spirit, the winner of the Freedom Film Fest will be given the Justin Louis Award.

This year, KOMAS and Konrad Adenaur Foundation are seeking unique stories on human rights issues. The theme is 50th Merdeka: The Untold Human Rights Stories.

KOMAS invites filmmakers to submit written film proposals about untold human rights stories in our nation. Three lucky individuals will receive the Justin Louis Award and a RM5,000 grant to transform their written proposal into a short documentary, which will premiere at the FreedomFilmFest2007 screenings in September, alongside other outstanding international human rights documentaries. Send your entries before April 6, 2007.
