theCICAK editors have shortlisted 11 entries for our “50 Years, 50 Heroes: Young Malaysians You Need to Know” essay writing competition.
These entries have been sent to the judges.
Meanwhile, YOU get to choose who gets the People’s Choice Award (Most Outstanding Hero prize) worth RM500!
Voting is now closed.

Frail, delicate, fragile. These are the first impressions strangers will get when they first meet Tan Bing Xuan. But make no mistake about that. Beneath that twisted body, rather than being a resentful recluse, Bing Xuan has emerged to be an extraordinary girl. Her shy surface is eclipsed by the strength of her grit and determination to overcome all odds to beat her debilitating disease. Everyday, for years, the teachers and students of our school will see Bing Xuan relentlessly pushing her specially modified wheelchair. Despite severe pain and episodes of breathlessness, she pushes…. and presses on, unconcerned about the jolts ravaging throughout her body. “ Refusing to quit “ is a phrase ingrained in her.
During this year’s Teachers’ Day, she painstakingly made cards for the teachers; struggling to type on her home computer, letter by letter, each card with a unique, exclusive design! It was the best Teachers’ Day card I’ve ever received – a labour of love borne literally out of sweat and tears! ( Sorry, other students, no offence meant! )
Bing Xuan’s life is etched with incessant obstacles that won’t go away, day-after-day, week-after-week. The hardest thing about it is that it is so daily that it threatens….and bruises! But the greatest lessons , we, the teachers, learn from this young girl is patience, courage, gratitude and so much more. And like what Chong Yong Wei says, “ A Hero a hundred times “. Our roles are reversed; Tan Bing Xuan is our teacher and we are her students.
We love her not only for who and what she is,
but for what she is making of us.
And for that , we are forever grateful.

I see Bing Xuan every schoolday. To me, she’s smart, cheerful and a true celebration of life. Her disabilities and physical limitations have never coloured my view of her BECAUSE SHE DID NOT ALLOW THEM TO. Bing Xuan, you are truly the hero a hundred times over as Yong Wei says.
Ms Liew Swee Fong hits the nail on the head when she says that because of Bing Xuan, we in AMC, Ipoh are better people.
