The National Union Bank of Employees (NUBE), which represents low income clerical and non-clerical workers, have been asking employers for a 30 percent salary increase and cost of living allowances.

On 3 November, the NUBE organised its first nationwide protest against the salary adjustment proposed by the Malayan Commercial Banks’ Association (MCBA). The protest took place in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh and Seremban.

MCBA agreed on the 30 percent salary increase, but not the cost of living allowance. In addition, MCBA wanted to discontinue the current two-month contractual bonus.

This did not go down well with NUBE.

MCBA’s counter-proposal is not going to increase banking employees’ overall salary adjustment.

Employees on the lower strata of the banking industry are unappreciated.

According to The Star, 10,000 people were at the steps of Menara Maybank, while Malaysiakini reported the total as 4,000. Over 600 bank employees and their families traveled to the city from Kelantan and Terengganu.

The protesters were armed with banners, flags, balloons, buttons and home-made posters. Some employees brought along their entire families. Picketers encouraged passing cars to honk in support of their cause.
