Who is to blame for Nurin’s death?

As much as I would like to grieve over the death of the 8-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, and get mad at the Malaysian law enforcement agencies for not doing their job, the basic truth is that she is nothing other than another victim of parental negligence.

And she isn’t the only one.

Earlier this year in April, 4-year-old Muhammad Nazrin (left) somehow wandered away from his parents in the SOGO shopping mall and ended up in the care of immigrants from Myanmar. Conveniently the parents have since admitted that Yin had ADHD and that it was difficult for them to keep track of their son.

But that, of course, didn’t stop them from bringing him to a shopping mall instead of leaving him with a babysitter.

Even after that, we were highlighted to another case of a boy found near the Bangsar LRT station. He was, of course, later claimed by his parents from the Welfare Department.

Let’s get back to Nurin’s case.

While her parents are grieving over her death, and the people are calling the government to look for the savage murderers who brutalized her, there are those out there who are putting the blame of this case on the lack of police enforcement, and there are those who are angered against the minister’s call to investigate her parents for charges on being negligent.

Well, I support that call.

The parents should be charged for being negligent, for allowing an 8-year-old girl to go to a pasar malam by herself.

That’s right. They let her walk to a pasar malam herself.

Do you know what was their justification for allowing her to do so?

Nurin’s father Jazimin Abd Jalil told The Star that his wife Norazian Bistaman allowed Nurin to go to the pasar malam alone thinking that nothing would happen to her as it was just a stone’s throw away from their flat.

When was the last time you let your kids out of the house without any adult supervision after reading in the papers of rapists and murderers?

In today’s society, with sick and perverted minds roaming everywhere, it’s not surprising if we were to find out that Nurin’s kidnap was actually premeditated.

To put the blame on the authorities is just as daft. It is not the job of the police to go and monitor pasar malams so that parents can simply let their kids run loose. And shopping mall reception counters should not be “lost and found” kids counters.

And parents please, don’t simply label your child as having ADHD just because you are incompetent. And if your child did have ADHD, would it not be wiser to leave him or her at home with a babysitter?

However in Malaysia, no one hires neighborhood teens as babysitters anymore.

We would rather hire Filipino’s and Indonesian’s to care for our kids.

In conclusion, parents, stop blaming the degradation of society, the police force as incompetent, the uncaring government and your loud and intrusive neighbors. The child is your responsibility. It’s your duty to take care of him or her.

Marina Mahathir may have a point in pointing out that people should give Nurin’s parents some room to grieve, to be sympathetic and not speculate.

But I personally think that by doing so, we are not doing justice to Nurin and so many other missing children who have suffered severe consequences due to their parents’ negligence and incompetence.
